Our History
Common Interest Services, Inc. manages common interest developments, or community associations. We have experience working with everything from associations as small as 4 units to 400+ unit high-rise buildings to mixed use home and office condos.
Founder and CEO Nels Atha began working with homeowners associations in 2002 with Management Professionals, Inc. (MPI) as a managers’ assistant. Following that he accepted an accounting position while working towards his B.A. in Business Administration at Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson, CA. In 2009, Nels resumed work on the management side as a portfolio manager of 17 separate Associations.
In 2011 Nels Atha founded Common Interest Services, Inc. with the goal of providing management services to small associations, mixed use and office condos, active adult communities, mobile communities and all other common interest developments that larger management companies are unable to service effectively.
In 2012 CIS entered into a partnership agreement with Management Professionals, Inc., an industry leading company with over 30 years of experience managing homeowners associations in the Greater Los Angeles Area. CIS has been equipped with seasoned support staff, a reliable and accurate accounting service, and cutting edge operating programs made to order, in-house.
In 2015 CIS doubled in size through the purchase of a substantial portion of a local community management company.
In 2016 the Greater Los Angeles Chapter of CAI appointed Nels Atha as one of two delegates to the California Legislative Action Committee. In addition to serving on multiple chapter committees, Nels Atha works to educate attorneys and legislators on upcoming bills which affect our clients and community associations throughout California.
Presently CIS is expanding throughout Los Angeles County. Although CIS is able to manage any community association in California, the main location in Torrance provides the best pricing for site walks and meeting attendance in the Greater Los Angeles Area.
Our Staff
To become a portfolio manager, employees of Common Interest Services, Inc. must first obtain the CCAM® designation from California Association of Community Managers, Inc.SM and the CMCA designation from the Community Association Managers International Certification Board. Each manager works closely with a PCAM designated manager and participates in continuing industry education.
CIS currently utilizes an accounting and support staff of about 8-10 full time members with experience ranging from 4 to 13 years.

- Prepare communities for future trials through leadership and education.
- Support community efforts through effective activism groups such as CAI-California Legislative Action Committee (CLAC).
